Often, I find with these pieces, that each of them has their own process and their own timeline. Sometimes I see what I am meant to right away, other times it can take years of knowing it's there, yet not being ready for it to emerge. - Kristina L Jager
Abstract Expressionism Photographic Art is a subsect of Abstract Photography. Abstract Expressionism itself is a movement born of New York after the Second World War, encompassing mostly painters many created not only paintings but also photographic pieces and sculptures. "this radical style of artwork is based on the artist’s inner psyche, the ‘gut feeling’ and his ensuing latent cognitive reaction. It is essentially a symbolic portrayal of emotions and moods, the message often being conveyed in a spontaneous, improvised fashion be it with the paint brush, the camera, the pen, or in sculpture." - Frances Smith
In recent years a new movement started to rise, Photographic Expressionism. Using the same framework as Abstract Expressionism, Photographic Expressionism builds on the genre of Abstract and uses emotion, connection, and the artist’s inner psyche. Artists use the medium of photography to create their work. With Photographic Expressionism techniques such as ICM (In Camera Movement), ME (Multiple Exposures), and Digital Editing, along with processes that involve working on the physical print, Doug Chinnery speaks of Photographic Expressionism “...as the next natural step in the evolution of expressionistic and abstract photography – blurring the gap further between the photographic and more traditional art disciplines.”
